The Absolutely True diary of a Part-Time
The Absolutely True diary of a Part- Time Indian is a story that explores the depths and dangers of ethnic relations, it describes the story of 14 year-old 'Junior', a young boy that lives on the Spokane Indian reservation in the state of Washington. The story follows 'Junior' who aims to make a better life for himself by attending to the All -White school of Reardan while also keeping his Indian values and traditions, how can he please both groups of very different people?
The booked was banned by a range of schools across the USA between 2008- 2011, most of which decided that the content was simply just too much for children of that age to handle at that tender stage, so they decided to remove it from the curriculum and the libraries. The boards of each school decided that the book was too deep and said that 'Sherman Alexie' did not shy away from the controversial subjects of Racism, Drugs and Sex Education as well as others but what's more highlighted them. Most of the schools were successful in implementing this ban such as Richland, Washington and Stockton, Missouri however not all of the board members were happy with decision. I could see eye to eye with banning the controversial book from the Curriculum as some parents may not be happy with their children studying such a book but I don't think it is fair for them to remove the book from the school libraries as I believe children should be able to read the book if they wish to do so.
