One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was written by Ken Kessey in 1959 and published in1962. It was mostly based on his work in a graveyard shift in a mental facility. The book was a big success but also a big shock. The hero is Randle Patrick, enters into a world where Nurses rule, but he does not agree. He rallies the rest of the patients and promotes gambling, smuggles wine, women and breaks the rules at every turn. After a short time, this little game turns into a war between patients and nurses.
This book was banned many times in different areas, the most recent in 2000 in a school in California. Schools first used it a study, but parents started to complain because of the nature of the book. As well as this, the narrator of the book is mentally ill. Therefor the world is different through his eyes, so the reader has to enterprite what is really happening which some young children are not able to do. The book is also very opinionated on certain matters like government forces, and shared some strong views which some higher authorities felt were not appropriate for society.
This book was not allowed to be taught in many schools for a while. Still today, the book is considered banned, but more teenagers are reading the novel, as they have a better understanding of the concepts and ideas mentioned in the book. I understand the reasoning for the book and think that there should e an age limit as the book discussing mature themes and ideas. However, I think that it is a good read from the reviews I have read, and am planning to read it in a few years.
Even though this book has been banned, a movie was made.
